Meditation 1

"But perhaps, even thought the senses do sometimes deceive us when it is a question of very small and distant things, still there are many other matters concerning which one simply cannot doubt, even though they are derived from the very same senses."

Decartes believe that everything that he had written are mostly true that he received from his senses or through the senses. He think that senses are sometimes deceptive, but if it is a question of very small and distant things than one can't be fooled.

i agree with what descartes has to say on senses being deceptive. as i was reading through it he mentioned that sometimes the simplest things come form the senses but shouldn't be doubted. some people are fooled by the simplest things when they shouldnt. i believe that descartes made his point. we may be deceived by our senses but not all our senses are questions of doubt. everything cannot be false, there are some things that are true because thats just how they were meant to be. a square can only have 4 sides, you cannot doubt that a square can only have 4 sides. things as simple as that are meant to be. like he says, its not in our power to know everything that is true but it is in our power to know what is false.

in my section he questions himself whether he is being deceived by god. if he is being deceived how can what he is saying be true?

good question Walter, it's part of life. We believe what our senses tells us. I've always wondered if god really exist, but no one has proved that god does exist or god doesn't exist. The only thing I know is that i choose to believe that god exist, that's how i was taught.
and the fact of what u said about "how do we know if he's right about what he wrote" same concept, if u choose to belief that he's right, then he's right!"
and Francia, i totally agree with you about the whole " it's not in our power to know everything that is true but it is our power to know what is false."
